The U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works unanimously voted today to advance the Water Resources Development Act to a floor vote; in the bill are a number of Corps of Engineers projects, including the $31 Billion storm surge protection plan outlined in the Coastal Texas Protection and Restoration Feasibility Study, informally known as the “Ike Dike”.

The project would line the mouth of Galveston Bay with a series of gates, blocking up to 22 feet of storm surge with additional protections in the form of dunes and flood walls for Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula. A similar bill is currently pending before committee in the House of Representatives.
