Molly Cook (D-Houston) won the special election to fill the unexpired term of former Senator John Whitmire (D-Houston), defeating Representative Jarvis Johnson (D-Houston) 57-43  This unexpired term ends 12-31-24.

Cook will face Representative Johnson again on May 28, 2024 in the primary runoff for placement on the November General Election ballot for the term that will begin in January 2025 and serve in the 89th Legislature.

Cook is a registered nurse and the first openly LGBTQ member of the Texas Senate.  She previously ran for the Senate in 2022, earning 42% against Senator John Whitmire in the Democratic Primary.
