Final Results

All the vote is in, and SOS shows Dutton wins by 107 votes.  Both camps will hit the ground running to do this again in the March 5 primary.  Early voting begins February 20.  Bios are attached for both candidates.  Texas Secretary of State Election Results https://results.texas-election.com/races

Jill Dutton                50.4%         6,822 votes
Brent Money           49.6%         6,715 votes

Two additional thoughts:

  • A recount is not likely.  Recounts are expensive, Money has already conceded, and the results are not really close enough to warrant a recount—especially since the real race is in a few weeks.
  • The SOS early vote in both Hunt and Van Zandt counties show exactly 1,254 early votes for Dutton, which is a bit unusual.  No one seems concerned so I suppose it has been verified.

Election Updates
HD 2 Special Election
January 30, 2024
7:30p
Early Vote

Early vote from all three counties is in, and less than 50 votes separate the candidates.

Dutton           49.65%         3,120 votes
Money           50.35%         3,164 votes

Jill Dutton and Brent Money faced off today in the HD 2 special election runoff to replace former Representative Bryan Slaton.  HD 2 covers Hopkins, Hunt, and Van Zandt counties.  This special election is the first electoral battle in the Texas Republican proxy war, and there’s a lot going behind the scenes as well as in the public eye.

Both candidates have experience with the public and private education systems, but Money is positioned as the voucher candidate and Dutton as the public education candidate.  Money comes to the race with all the same backers as Slaton had, including Defend Texas Liberty; the new DTL sister PAC, Texans for a United Conservative Majority; Paxton; Cruz; and now the addition of Governor Abbott.  Dutton has been endorsed by former Governor Rick Perry, ART, TLR, and many House members aligned with Speaker Phelan.  Dutton shows a lot more money raised on ethics reports, but how much has been spent by independent expenditure is unknown.

The winner of today’s race will fill the unexpired term between now and January and the winner won’t even serve during a regular session.  They won’t get a chance to relax, either, because Dutton and Money are both on the March 5 primary ballot as well.

In the November 7 special election, Money bested Dutton by 1,833 votes.
