Election Updates
2026 General Election
11-5-26
The Texas Senate will remain 19R-12D. There will be two special elections in the Senate, SD 14 and SD 16.
Texas House will now be 67R-83D (barring any changes to the current results) which is a change from 88R-62D. There may be one special election in the House in HD 93, as the winning candidate is possibly ineligible due to a prior felony conviction and federal prison term. She had previously suspended her campaign but ballots had already been printed. She is awaiting legal advice as to her eligibility. A Republican winner in that special would change the split to 68R-82D.
Historical General Election Turnout Totals
2026 Midterm 52% 9,890,080
2024 Presidential 61% 11,388,674
2022 Midterm 46% 8,102,908
2020 Presidential 67% 11,315,056
2018 Midterm 53% 8,371,655
Mail ballots: Keep in mind overseas ballots have 5 days and military ballots have 6 days to arrive and be counted, so final numbers may be a couple days away for very close districts This is unlikely to have much effect unless a district has a large military base. . https://www.votetexas.gov/voting-by-mail/military-and-overseas-voters.html
Recounts: Candidates have until two days after canvassing to request a recount. Canvassing happens between three and eleven days after the election. The requesting candidate must pay between $60-100 per precinct for the recount. Cost can become a significant factor in deciding to request a recount. For example, HD 26 has 218 precincts and HD 67 has 54 precincts. None of the currently-close districts have a military base that might generate a large number of late ballots. The close districts have a couple more days for mail ballots to come in. Recounts rarely change an outcome unless the difference is in single or double digits, particularly if most of the voting was electronic. Candidates are as likely to lose votes in a recount as they are to gain them. I have not heard of any plans for recounts at the moment.
Election Results: Final canvassing must be completed between 3 and 11 days after the election. Results are available on the SOS site and will also be posted on the Roundtable Elections page as they become available. https://txroundtable.com/elections/
Expected Special Elections:
SD 16 Senator Nathan Johnson* (D) will be Attorney General
SD 14 Senator Sarah Eckhardt* (D) will be Comptroller
HD 93 General election winner Ericka Lomick (D) may be ineligible to serve

ELECTION CODE
TITLE 13. RECOUNTS
CHAPTER 212. REQUESTING RECOUNT
Sec. 212.022. OBTAINING INITIAL RECOUNT IN ELECTION ON OFFICE. Except as provided by Section 212.0241, a candidate for nomination or election to an office may obtain an initial recount in an election in which the person was a candidate if:
(1) the difference in the number of votes received by the candidate and any candidate for the office who is shown by the election returns to be nominated, elected, or entitled to a place on a runoff ballot or tied for nomination, election, or entitlement to a place on a runoff ballot is less than 10 percent of that candidate’s number of votes;
(3) the secretary of state certifies that counting errors affecting the election occurred in one or more election precincts in which paper ballots were used, as provided by Section 212.034; or
