Just a few months ago Jerry Ford Jr. was the NCAA Division 1 national leader in stolen bases. The 22 year old “Black Lives Matter” social justice student activist at Texas Southern University and President of TSU Young Democrats announced his candidacy for Texas State Representative in Northwest Houston district 139. This was a seat held by the recently retired Houston mayoral candidate Sylvester Turner.
“I believe it is time for a new generation of young people to take the lead,” said Ford. “The Republican legislative majority has shortchanged education funding every session since taking control of both houses, by cutting from our schools in Springisd, AldineISD, and surrounding districts.”
Ford is a radio personality on KCOH 1230am, KTSU 90.9 Fm, political columnist for the Houston Forward Times Newspaper, member of the TSU debate team and Southern Student Leadership Association (SSLA).
Ford, a former College baseball player, was known for his aggressive style of play and helped led Texas Southern University to the program’s 3rd SWAC championship in 2015 while making his 5th All Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball team.
“The tax policies of the current Republican regime in Austin unfairly favor big business at the expense of small businesses. Small businesses are the heart and soul of our community. I am ready to fight for a level playing field,” said Ford.
Ford is known for his community activism at Texas Southern University in the 3rd ward community. Ford has been a vocal leader in the Black Lives Matter movement in Houston by calling out the injustices of Jordan Baker, Trayvon Martin, Eric Gardner, and Sandra Bland.
“This is going to be a grassroots campaign across the district,” Ford said. “It time to pass the baton to the next generation”.
According to Ford, “Every movement has been shaped with the energy of young people combined with the wisdom of our elders. The problem today is that most of our elder won’t stop running for office preventing young people from taking leadership roles in our communities.”
He adds, “This generation is ready to go to Austin to challenge the Republicans, bring back funding to our school districts, help our small businesses, build the middle class, energize and mobilize our communities and begin to promote progressive ideas to Turn Texas Blue.”
The primary will be held on March 1 2016, with the election on November 3 2016.
